Analysis of the Main Noise Sources of Vibration Motors
The noise of a vibration motor can generally be divided into three categories: aerodynamic noise, mechanical noise, and electromagnetic noise.
For vibration motors, mechanical noise is by far the dominant noise source.
1. Mechanical Noise (the most important and prominent source)
Bearing Noise:
Cause: Bearings are subjected to extremely high and high-frequency radial impact loads. Elastic deformation and impacts occur between the raceways and rolling elements. Poor lubrication (too much, too little, or degraded grease), improper installation (incorrect clearance or misalignment), wear, or spalling can significantly amplify noise, producing sharp "hissing" sounds or periodic "clicking" noises.
Characteristics: Rich in high-frequency components; sharp and irritating.
Eccentric Block Rotation Noise:
Cause: The periodic centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation of the eccentric blocks causes structural vibration of the motor housing and the entire machine, which then radiates noise. If the eccentric blocks are loose, severe and destructive impact noise may occur.
Characteristics: Related to the rotational speed (fundamental frequency) and its multiples (harmonics); relatively low-pitched noise.
Structural Resonance Noise:
Cause: When the natural frequency of the motor itself or the mounting structure is close to the excitation frequency (rotational speed), resonance occurs, resulting in abnormally loud booming noise.
Characteristics: Suddenly increases at specific speeds; extremely harmful.
Impact Noise at Connection Points:
Cause: Looseness of bolts at the flanges or base plates connecting the motor to the equipment, or between different components of the machine, leading to high-frequency micro-impacts and friction.
Characteristics: High-frequency, irregular noise, usually accompanied by intense local vibration.
2. Aerodynamic Noise
Cause: Vortex noise and rotational noise generated when the cooling fan at the motor's rear cuts through the air. In vibration motors, its sound level is usually much lower than mechanical noise, but when mechanical noise is well controlled, it can become the dominant audible noise.
Characteristics: Wind-like sound with a broad frequency range.
3. Electromagnetic Noise (Secondary)
Cause: Vibration of the stator core and windings due to magnetic field pulsations between the stator and rotor. In well-designed standard vibration motors, this noise contribution is small and usually masked by mechanical noise.
Characteristics: Low-frequency humming sound.
