What is a speed controller?


A speed controller is a device or group of devices that can coordinate in a predetermined manner the performance of an electric motor. A speed controller might include a manual or automatic means for starting and stopping the motor, selecting forward or reverse rotation, selecting and regulating the speed, regulating or limiting the torque, and protecting against overloads and electrical faults.

There are many types of speed controllers:

Applications

The main objective of using a speed controller instead of using a simple mechanical switch is to control the speed, start/ stop, and rotation of the motor in a more accurate way. The limitation of a mechanical switch is the current limit. A big electric motor can draw up to 30Amp and above where most of the switches are unable to take it. Furthermore, we are unable to control the motor speed using pulse width modulation (PWM). The most common motor controllers in the market are using an H-bridge circuit where we are able to control a large motor using a small signal.


How does a speed controller work?

Speed controllers are usually supplied with AC power. The power that comes into a controller is at a set frequency. The motor controller first turns that AC to DC, then turns the DC back into AC at the right frequency. It uses a device called a rectifier to make DC current.


How to choose a speed controller?

Speed controllers can only be chosen after you have selected your motors. Also, the current a motor draws is related to the torque it can provide: a small DC motor will not consume much current, but cannot provide much torque, whereas a large motor can provide higher torque but will require a higher current to do so.


Types of speed controller

Speed controllers can be manually, remotely or automatically operated. They may include only the means for starting and stopping the motor or they may include other functions.

 

An electric motor speed controller can be classified by the type of motor it is to drive, such as permanent magnet, servo, series, separately excited, and alternating current.

 

A speed controller is connected to a power source, such as a battery pack or power supply, and control circuitry in the form of analog or digital input signals.
