The difference between brushless DC and brushed DC

1. Working Principle

Brushed DC Motor:

The main components include the stator, rotor, and brushes.

It generates rotational torque through a rotating magnetic field, producing mechanical power.

The brushes constantly contact the commutator, providing conduction and commutation during rotation.

Brushless DC Motor:

Consists of the motor body and driver, representing a typical mechatronic product.

The rotor usually contains permanent magnets. When the stator windings are energized, they generate a rotating magnetic field, driving the rotor.

Hall sensors detect the position of the permanent magnets, and electronic circuits switch the current direction in the coils to ensure the magnetic force is correctly oriented to drive the motor.

2. Performance

Brushed DC Motor:

More mature technology with faster start-up response and higher start-up torque.

Provides smooth speed variation, higher output power, and control precision up to 0.01 mm.

Brushless DC Motor:

Lower interference and noise.

Longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs due to the absence of brushes, eliminating the main source of motor failures.

Potentially higher efficiency, particularly in specific applications like fans, where significant efficiency improvements can be achieved.

3. Control Methods

Brushed DC Motor:

Direction control is usually achieved by swapping two phase lines.

Speed control is primarily done by adjusting the voltage supplied to the motor, altering the magnetic field strength generated by the electrodes to change the speed.

Brushless DC Motor:

Direction control can be achieved by swapping any two phase lines or changing the phase of the control signal.

Speed control is done by adjusting the duty cycle of the PWM, changing the voltage fluctuations on the I/O port to control the motor power and speed.
