Crane Speed Reducer

Definition

A crane speed reducer is a mechanical device installed between the power source (such as an electric motor) and the working mechanism of a crane. It uses a gear speed converter to lower the rotational speed of the motor to the required level and increase the torque, enabling the crane to perform tasks such as lifting, moving, and rotating heavy objects at the appropriate speed and force.

 

Working Principle

It typically operates based on the meshing of gears. The power from a high-speed rotating power source like an electric motor or internal combustion engine is transmitted to the input shaft of the speed reducer. On the input shaft, there is a small gear that meshes with a large gear on the output shaft, achieving the purpose of speed reduction and torque increase. In some cases, multiple pairs of gears with different tooth numbers may be used to achieve the desired reduction ratio.

 

Types

Helical Gear Speed Reducers: Feature high torque capacity and reliability, suitable for high-capacity crane drives. They usually have multiple reduction stages, with options for solid or hollow carbon steel shafts, involute gearing, rugged cast iron housings, and can be vertically mounted.

Worm Gear Speed Reducers: These have the characteristics of reverse self-locking and can provide a large reduction ratio. The input and output shafts are neither on the same axis nor in the same plane. However, they generally have a large volume, low transmission efficiency, and relatively low accuracy.

Planetary Gear Speed Reducers: Are known for their compact structure, small return clearance, high precision, long service life, and large rated output torque. But they are relatively more expensive.

 

Functions

Speed Reduction and Torque Increase: Reduces the high speed of the motor to a speed suitable for the crane's working mechanism and simultaneously increases the torque to enable the crane to lift and move heavy loads with ease.

Inertia Reduction: Reduces the inertia of the load connected to the crane, which is beneficial for the stability and accuracy control of the crane's movements. The reduction in inertia is proportional to the square of the reduction ratio.

High Load-Bearing Capacity: The gears of crane speed reducers usually undergo processes such as carburization, quenching, and grinding, which significantly enhances their load-bearing capacity compared to ordinary gear reducers.

Small Size and Light Weight: With the same load-bearing capacity, they take up less space and weigh less than soft tooth surface and medium hard tooth surface reducers, facilitating installation and use on cranes.

High Efficiency, Low Noise, and Low Vibration: Through gear grinding and trimming, the accuracy is improved, resulting in high transmission efficiency, low vibration, and low noise during operation, which helps to improve the working environment and service life of the crane.
