Belt Drive Pulley
Routine Inspection & Failure Signs
Check the groove bottom: If the bottom appears polished or shiny, it indicates belt slippage due to insufficient tension.
Check the groove sidewalls: If the flanks show stepped wear or deep scoring, the belt profile is mismatched, or the system is chronically overloaded.
Check for vibration: If the equipment vibrates excessively at high speed (after ruling out bearing issues), the sheave may have poor dynamic balance or a loose taper bushing.
Practical Sizing Advice for Replacements
If you have an old sheave and need a replacement:
DO NOT simply measure the overall outside diameter (OD). Always measure the top groove width and groove depth with calipers, then cross-reference with a standard chart to identify the exact section (A/B/C or SPA/SPB).
Measure the actual shaft diameter precisely (to the nearest 0.1 mm).
Best practice: Opt for a taper-bushed sheave system. Although it costs slightly more upfront, the ease of maintenance and interchangeability far outweigh the extra expense - you can replace only the rim while reusing the existing bushing.
